The Coast to Coast 42K (CC) is a race steeped in Faial Island's history and natural beauty, allowing participants to traverse the island from one coast to the other. This 42K challenge is a modern-day reflection of the routes once used by Faialenses to connect their parishes and transport essential goods, offering a unique blend of cultural heritage and athletic endeavor.

The course departs from Porto do Comprido (Capelo), at the foot of the iconic Capelinhos Volcano — known for its 1957 eruption and a symbol of Faial's dynamic natural history. From this dramatic geological landmark, runners head east across the island, traversing landscapes defined by tectonic faults. The geologically active terrain contributes to the race's significant elevation changes, with approximately 5,480 ft+ of ascent over roughly 40 km (≈ 24.9 mi), presenting a formidable challenge to even seasoned runners.

What makes the CC particularly memorable is its finish line in Horta, at Avenida 25 de Abril on the city's seafront — recognized as one of the most stunning vistas in the world. Crossing the island from the volcanic west to the historic harbour town adds a profound sense of achievement to the experience, bringing runners from the raw geological frontier of Capelinhos to the bay that has welcomed transatlantic sailors for centuries.

Support for participants is available at aid stations along the route

The Coast to Coast 42K thus becomes more than just a physical test; it's a journey through the heart of Faial's landscape — from the dramatic power of an active volcanic frontier to the timeless beauty of Horta Bay.
